How do you hook up a telephone jack

On the back of the phone jacks, there are usually four connections—one red, one green, one black, and one yellow. The red and green "Christmas trees" wires to power the first, or primary, line in your home. The black and yellow "bumblebees" wires don't get used unless a second line is added to your home. Adding a second line to your home is an easy task that even the least experienced do-it-yourselfer can do without costly interference from a telephone technician.

In older telephone installations, the phone cable typically has four wires inside: red, green, black, and yellow. Category cable works just as well as the old cable for phone service, and it works much better for data such as for a DSL internet connection. With either type of cable, once the cable is run to the jack location, wiring the jack is a simple matter of matching up the correct wire colors. In fact, only the phone company can shut off the power to the phone system. But just to be safe, don't work on phone wiring with wet hands or when standing in water. Rotate the strippers as needed to cut all the way around the sheathing, being careful not to cut into the insulated wires inside the cable. Pull the cut piece of sheathing off of the end of the cable to expose the inner wires.
